A simple but nice opening page has a picture that changes everytime you load it. I think this is pretty cool at first. Then I see the preview presentation. It's a fully interactive Flash movie. It's awesome. Simply the best intro I've seen on an adult site, period. This looks like top notch stuff and I immediately can't wait to see more.
In case you're not familiar, Color Climax is a pretty famous porno mag that started in the late '60s in Denmark. They're kind of like the Vivid Video of Europe- they've worked with all the big stars in the 60s and 70s (John Holmes, Tiny Tove, etc.). While they're not as popular these days (in my opinion), they've still earned a place in porno history.
Now that you know the history, we can get to the goods. The main members page is as simple as possible and that's the way I like it. It takes up only one screensworth of space and all the links are right there: the photos, the videos, the stories and the bonuses, all linked on the front page as well as on the navigation bar above. Big thumbs up on this simple and effective layout.
Clicking on the "Studios" link brings you to their list of sets within each of the studios they have set up. The studio names really act as categories (Lesbian Love," "Anal Sex," etc.) and clicking on one of those brings up a list of the sets available for that studio. The layout for this is very nice- you get the set name and the models' names on the left and when you hold your mouse over the title, a little thumbnail for the set pops up. Very clever. The way in which you view a set is pretty interesting as well.
Clicking on a set brings up not just a big group of thumbnails, but a story with the images embedded within- just like a magazine format. Some people may find this distracting, as they just want the goods, but I think it's a great way of presenting the images.
On that note, however, I should mention that you might want to right click and open in a new window each photo set you want to see, as clicking "Back" from a photo set will take you back to the main page instead of back to the studio listing. That's extremely frustrating and very disappointing and, for some reason, it doesn't happen every time. Just to be safe, though, I would suggest opening each set in a different window.
Apart from the "Studios" section, you can also find photos in the "Archives," "Signature" and "Xposed" section. The best part about the Archives is that the images are seperated by decade- you can go back to the 70s and see what Color Climax was printing back then.
If you're an aficianado of porn from the 70s and 80s, this is an amazing collection. The Signature link takes you to a list of stars of the past and each of their sets (and videos) available on the site. We're talking some big names here: John Holmes, Tiny Tove, Peter North and Solange are on there. The Xposed section is all non-Color Climax stuff. All still very high quality stuff, but most of it is more modern and some of it pretty softcore. I would consider this bonus material.
The photo sets in each of these sections contain anywhere from 12-25 photos. I know that doesn't sound like a lot, but not only are there hundreds of sets, but these are not your average sets. They really take the time to make sure each image is unique, unlike most sites these days. The added story with most sets is also a nice bonus. More importantly, however, these are magazine-quality images, not some bullshit a guy took with his point and click digital camera.
There is professional glamour lighting, real sets and real costumes. A definite effort was made to bring you quality porn and I refuse to let it go unnoticed.
The photo viewing system is nice, as well, with most sets having a seperate photo-only viewing mode as well as story-mode. Clicking on any picture opens up that picture in full size and quality, with "next" and "previous" buttons on the top with a little gauge to tell you what picture number you're on in the set. The picture quality is very high, but not extraordinary. My only real complaint about the photos is that there's no way to download an entire series in a .zip file.
The "Theater" section is my favorite part of the site.
In the "Color Climax" area of the theater, you get to see all of the video content CC has produced since the 70s. Mind you, they haven't done much in recent years, but the quantity of stuff they've got from that era is impressive to say the least. The videos are listed on the right by title, and clicking on the title brings up a thumbnail and an option for small or large streaming sizes. Both sizes are Quicktime (also my favorite) and both sizes are actually downloadable (though it's a bit trickier to get the small one).
The small size is definitely small (160x120) and best for previewing, as it streams completely in just moments. It's Quicktime, so of course it's legible, but to really see the action you should take the time to download the large version (each running at about 80MB-120MB at 400x300 resolution). The videos range in length from 6 minutes to 15 minutes and have every sort of action you can imagine: anal, lesbian, transsexual and even some pissing. These are 70s girls and many are European, so that means real tits and hair everywhere, folks. But here's the catch: all of the movies are dubbed in what appears to be German. And I don't mean that the movies are *in* German. No, they were apparently all done in another language (many in English, I assume) and then redubbed in German. So that severely takes away from the enjoyment for me, not only because I don't speak much German, but also because all the sounds are faked.
Other than that big problem, I love the videos and the quality of the large size. Videos are added a couple of times a week on average (there's a "What's New" link on the main page). Also in the Theater section is a link to two seperate Hustler feeds. However, I could not even get the Hustler player to load on the latest version of IE, so I don't know what any of that is like.
Despite the movies being in German and some minor navigation problems, I found Color Climax to be extremely interesting and well-put together. It harkens back to a time when quality standards were much higher in pornography and a lot more time and effort was put into making something look professional. There's something about the older stuff that just seems more ... real. The price on the site is a bit higher than most, but if you're one for quality over quantity (though this site has both), you'll easily get your money's worth. Color Climax is great and keeps growing and, assuming they keep up the good work (and maybe release the undubbed versions of the movies), there's plenty of value to be had here.
